There were more curious wallflowers than hula-hooping dancers yesterday as the wireless headphones-assisted dance party Silent Frisco took over the second floor of the Macworld conference. (It continues today from noon to 6 p.m. with DJs Motion Potion and u9lift). For Sunset Promotions, which takes Silent Frisco to locales like Ocean Beach and Treasure Island and plans an ambitious schedule of events this year, it's a huge opportunity to turn people on to the joys of a dance party, without the elements that can be barriers to entry for many (late night hours, intoxication, loud noise).

BLVD at the INDEPENDENT

Over
the past 2 decades there have been few bands or acts with whom
SunsetSF has worked more often and successfully than BLVD. The SF born
electronic trio in many ways represents everything we love about our
music scene. They are classically trained musicians who play dance
music. They are hip hop producers who don’t bother with rap (anymore).
They are terribly introverted people who play incredibly extroverted,
explosive music. Their shows are like family reunions, where everyone
knows everyone and everyone knows every word to every song… and yet
there typically ARE no words. BLVD has ceased its constant touring and
their local performances are getting fewer and further between as the
three cornerstones move on to other projects. But there is nothing quite
like the rare times when they come together. Don’t miss this one

In
2008, Sunset’s first year working on Sea of Dreams, we failed famously
and massively on the box office/entry system throwing a major damper on
what was otherwise a great event. Hundreds were inconvenienced and we
spent weeks of personal time unraveling the mess, apologizing, making
amends. We also set a goal during that time to get this event to 100%
customer satisfaction, ie: perfection.
As we know, this goal isn’t totally realistic but we wanted to chase it
relentlessly. In 2011, our colleagues in the industry at CMAC
recognized our improvement by voting Sea of Dreams California’s “Best
Event Over 5000.” And while we still strive towards the fleeting and
subjective ideal of perfection,
we think we achieved a degree of excellence at Sea of Dreams 2012 that
surpassed even 2011′s lofty standards. Every stage, every area, every
artist was a HIT. The entry took no more than 10 minutes for most and
the entire audience was in the doors by 11:30pm. We had ZERO ambulance
calls and only a few minor medical incidents ably handled by the
professionals from Rock Med. The VIP areas were vastly improved, in
flow, offerings, and access. More than 5 days after the event we have only positive feedback from our community (although we welcome any feedback that would help us improve in the future).

want to thank you all so much for your spirit, your costumes, your
maturity and energy. We want to thank all of the many artists of all
kinds that helped make this event so beautiful. We want to thank our
friends at the Concourse for all of their hard work. We want to
recognize the terrific work done by our vendors and partners on
production, art, sound, lights, staging etc, including Spider Ranch,
Dan English, Felix Lighting, Accurate Staging, Kinetic Events,
Ticketfly, CSC Security, Rock Med, Nexus, Dirtybird, Hookahdome, Om

Arts and everyone else. We are grateful for the incredible efforts of

Caspa : Righteous Dubstep

Madness. It’s just madness what happens in a proper dubstep mosh. Like other intense seminal styles that came before it such as punk, northern soul, or metal, a dubstep dancefloor is sweaty, intense, and visceral. The music hits like heavy wet waves of seawater, pulsing, punishing, and heavy. In the US, much dubstep, glitch (the hip hop version) and grime, is played on laptops using mixing software like Ableton. But in London, in the East side grime scene where the movement started, a DJ’s skills on the decks, are as important as the music he plays. Like his frequent collaborator, Rusko, Caspa, had to overcome enormous odds to rise to the top of the dubstep scene. Simply put, young white kids have a hard time getting respect in the East London grime scene. That he has come so far so fast is testament not only to Caspa’s skills in the studio, but to his unarguable abilities on the decks, mixing live, with dubplates, records, cds, and serato.

This Saturday, Silent Frisco returns to the Central SAPC in Santa Monica for another round of unintentional comedy and dancefloor mayhem. This time Silent Frisco welcomes LA underground electronic dance music legend DJ WOLFIE. A longtime producer, DJ, promoter and blogger, Wolfie has done more to move dance music and underground culture in LA than any other two people combined. Of late, his production skills have taken a huge turn for the explosive and this Saturday will be his first foray into Silent Disco. Wolfie will close the show, playing after Silent Frisco resident Motion Potion. Expect a lot of remixes, mashups and banging breakbeats. Dancing. Dancing in the streets!	Among the many bands that SunsetSF has been fortunate to work with and to help develop are Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra and Grupo Fantasma. Now, Adrian Quesada and Martin Perna, respective bandleaders of these two supergroups have formed a revved-up/stripped down world-electronic ensembel called OCOTE SOUL SOUNDS. The duo of Perna and Quesada developed their musical paths in eerily similar parallel universes. Though Quesada grew up in the Texas border-town of Laredo, and Perna came up in Philadelphia both musicians straddled borders literally and artistically. Growing up on hip hop and the jazz and funk it was built on; both taught themselves to play multiple instruments; both had founded game-changing, booty-shaking big bands; and both were deeply moved by a powerful spirit of social and political activism, the spirit that was to become Ocote. Catch them this Saturday!	The boys are back in town and they wont be alone. As if our favorite Bay Area electronic band wasn’t enough to knock off the NYE hangover, we just added two more killer acts to push this show over the top. CRUSH EFFECT feat. VOKAB COMPANY MC’s has been making waves in production circles with award winning remixes of the likes of Claude Von Stroke. Featuring keyboardist David Veith, Sax player Jesse Malloy and Los Perez on drums, they will be joined by Vokab company MC’s for their San Francisco debut. Caspa coming to SF is a bit like a father coming home to meet his long lost children. London is where the grime scene started and many of the early stars of “bass music” come from the UK: Skream, Benga, Rusko and Caspa are just a few. And yet, California was such a ravenous and obvious early adopter of this style that it’s arguable that the West Coast of the US has been more influential of late than the UK. One of the chief culprits for this early adoption and recent adjustment, experimentation and development is San Francisco’s own An-Ten-Nae. His four “Acid Crunk” compilations have shown a light on many of the more daring and underexposed producers in this scene… like a male, hat-wearing, American, BBC-less Mary Anne Hobbs. Adding An-Ten-Nae to a Caspa show is like putting ntiro-tanks on a Ferrari. Overkill. R.I.P. JOVAN COLEMAN of DAM FUNK’s MASTER BLAZTER
SunsetSF and SF Funk Fest would like to express our sincere condolences to the family of Javon Coleman aka J1, or The Deer. The drummer for DAM FUNK & MASTER BLAZTER we only just met Javon for the first time a few short weeks ago when he rocked the hell out of the Mezzanine. Javon passed away this week while on tour in Sweden and this is yet another stark reminder of the impermanence of our existence on this plane. We try our best to make the most of every moment and we hope you all do the same. Please go dance, sing, play something, hug someone. Listen to J1′s solo album HERE.

And while it’s hard to pinpoint one highlight of our first complete SFFF month-long run since 2008, there were many beautiful moments that stand out. Dam Funk wading through the crowd with his Keytar, the sweaty dancefloor at Kraak & Smaak, the incredible charisma of Morris Day & the Time, the wonderful scene for Romanowski at Motown on Mondays, and the sight of whole club still full and dancing (to FUNK no less dealt by SFFF founder MoPo) long after the Budos and Afrolicious left the stage last Saurday. The SF Funk Fest is the thanks that keeps on giving. Just when you thought it was safe to go on vacation or do some shopping another huge show has been added to the 10th Anniversary November run. Yoshis will host famed disco-funk icons the S.O.S. Band for 2-shows a night on Friday, November 25 and Saturday, November 26. Blurring the lines between bomb-heavy P-Funk, disco-jazz and proto-house, the S.O.S. Band penned some of the biggest dance jams of all time, including “TAKE YOUR TIME (Do it Right)” and “JST BE GOOD TO ME”. What surprises most people who see them today is the fact that their live performances go far beyond what one would expect from an act more than three decades old. Like past SF Funk Fest guests Mandrill, the Headhunters, and, the Family Stone, the S.O.S. Band is as strong a live act as they ever were, and two nights on Yoshi’s impeccable sound system should be the perfect stew for their sauce. EoTo & Ill Gates by Nina Noel

There’s few things more fun than a healthy dancefloor. But what added to the magic of EoTo’s 11.18 performance at Mezzanine, were the odds they defeated to pull it off. With a good deal of their complex electronics having crashed 3 songs into their set, EoTo fell back on their simple virtuosity and instrumental skill. That the lack of some of their “toys” was unnoticeable to anyone but them is a testament to just how good these guys are. They rocked the party with one hand literally tied behind their backs.
