Fast, faster, and out of control. Those are the three speeds that the Budos Band drives. It’s not their 11-piece collection of vintage instruments on stage that makes them special. Nor is it the vintage 60′s funk sounds they so aptly unleash. It’s the Budos attitutude that sets them apart. There have been quite a few vintage soul outfits to come out of Brooklyn in the past decade, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Lee Fields, Charles Bradley, and of course, Antibalas, but the Budos is more aggressive, irrascible, and overwhelming than these. If they were an athelete, it would be said that they play with a “chip on their shoulder“. Maybe it’s the Brooklyn rearing. Maybe it’s years of being lumped in with these similar peers. Or maybe it’s that these gentlemen have captured that other sports dogma axiom “play each game as if it’s your last”. This Saturday, the Budos hit Mezzanine joined by Afrolicious live. Make sure you bring your dancing shoes and a thick skin. This one might not be for the feint of heart.

Noone does a better job of picking the future of electronic music than our friends at Blasthaus. And when it comes to techno, noone is more respected for putting on interesting and evocative shows in this market, period. This Friday, they are doing an unusual live electronic double bill at Mighty featuring Taking ANDY STOTT (Live), and CHRISTIAN LOEFFLOER (live). Stott is one of the true masters of both techno and dub music for more than 20 years. Loeffler, Kompact records rising star from Berlin will also perform live in his first-ever US performance. Both artists, fresh off the heels of critically acclaimed albums amongst the international music scene, perform live at one of our favorite venues in SF, Mighty! It’s always a thrill to catch big sounds on Mighty’s big “paradise Garage” system, but when we get the live element as well it makes the room truly special. Memories of Kraak & Smaak’s 2008 live performance come to mind. Seeing live dance music in such an intimate room will enable the audience and artist to sweat on one another. Returning this March to San Francisco, two of our favorite new creators in dance music: Reno duo Love & Light and Canadian phenom JPOD the Beat Chef. As much of the music industry world continues to wrestle with its simultaneous loathing of dubstep and addiction to its cheap young money, the West Coast has already moved on. We’re an impatient bunch out here and our attention span demands constant creativity from our musical friends. Thankfully, there are artists like Love & Light and JPOD to fill the need. All of the production tools and lessons learned from the last 5 years of bass music are still evident. But what’s also evident is a healthy respect for musicality, and sonic balance that much bass music seems to have lost sight of. Love and Light put their mission in their name and their music reflects that. JPOD isn’t known as the “Beat Chef” for no reason. There are few producers who lay it down like this guy, nor many with as broad a range if tastes. In this absolutely brilliant photo, Misha Kutuzov captures the exact moment when the lights went on at 4am curfew. This is, quite literally, the end of the party, and the joy and gratitude being expressed by the still very healthy audience is palpable. For a night of so many stars on the stage, and the audience, its doubtful that any made as big a first impression on so many NEW fans as Nick “Pumpkin” Alvarado. If this picture depicts anything besides gratitude, it’s that collective spiriutual “Damn!” that we feel when an event of this scale is finally over. The two greatest dance music bands of their generation face off right in your earholes this Friday in Los Angeles. The Talking Heads are one of the most influential acts of all time. Combining punk sensibilities with a truly global take on disco, the Talking Heads managed to redefine the funk and set the stage for post-disco eclectic dance music. When LCD Soundystem emerged more than 2 decades, it was clear that the Talking Heads has influenced them in style and substance. That LCD would go on to become one of the most beloved and influential acts of their time is a testament, not only to the talent of Murphy, Mahoney et al. But it’s also indicative that people WANT what these bands do better than most. They want to dance. They want dynamic, soulful music that has changes and progressions. They want to hear a lot of different things but never lose their way on the dancefloor. And if the same critics seem to laud and loathe them fore all the same reasons, it justserves to demonstrate how much they have in common. For
the past 10 years Michael Harms has given his heart and soul to music,
through his label (Hot N Heavy Recordings), solo projects (Tone Chaser,
Konnekt, Exotic Pet Dealers) and as the mixer and engineer for over 100
tracks for artists all over the world. His unique and magic studio touch
in mixing and mastering has enabled dozens of artists to achieve
massive chart success. Mikey’s selfless, and tireless work has helped
to fulfill the musical ambitions of many a producer. He is one of the
“glue” people in the music industry, mostly unnoticed, seldom
celebrated, but CRUCIAL to success of dance music.

Michael is battling a life-threatening medical condition called Chiari
Malformation, a rare and serious neurological defect. He had a severe
form of this condition which caused the cerebellum to descend into the
base of his skull and completely block the spinal fluid from his spinal
cord. Only 1 in 1000 are born with this condition and there is
currently no cure. He recently had to undergo intensive Surgery . The
operation was risky with no guarantee of success and with no health
insurance, being denied by both Healthy SF and Medi-Cal, he has crippling hospital
bills. He continues to require treatment for other serious
conditions and rehab, we want to help relieve as much of the
financial burden we can but we need your help!

The last time we tried this, even we were shocked at how well it went down. I mean, who even TRIES to do a whole set of Radiohead music. They would have to be a little nuts right? But Motion Potion is just the man for such impossible missions and after taking on Talking Heads, he had an idea at least and did an admirable job of making Thom Yorke’s square pegs fit in Jonny Greenwood’s round holes. But that was last time THIS TIME he’s coming armed for bear with 7 (count ‘em) SEVEN new Radiohead remixes made by he and some of his good friends. The set has been reworked, optimized and refined to be, yes, “fitter, happier, and more productive.” And speaking of bears, the Daft Punk set will be brought to you by none other than LA legend “Bear Fight” whose twisted take on the French techno legends will leave you screaming “TRON, save me from KLU!”

The “breakfast sandwich that ate all other breakfast sandwiches” boasts a fried tortilla, ham, bacon, sausage, eggs, aeoli, ketchup, hot sauce and two types of cheese. After MoPo rocked out the first two weeks, Matt Haze takes over the decks for the next two.

The
West Coast’s premier NYE event launches
Thursday, October 25 at 11:11am with its most exciting, visually artistic and
theatrical lineup yet. The “GalaxSea”
Stage features international gypsy rock superstars GOGOL BORDELLO, playing
their first San Francisco show in more than a year. Trailblazing electronic
wizard SHPONGLE merges with performance art troupe QUIXOTIC to debut SHPONGLE’s
QUIXOTIC MASQUERADE. DIEGO’s UMBRELLA will open the stage with an extended set
of their patented gypsy-pirate-rock and “8-bit warrior” ROBERT DELONG will
close the stage.

The “LunaSea” stage will opens with 20+ piece REALISTIC ORCHESTRA, playing
two sets of their patented JAZZ MAFIA material. The VAU DE VIRE SOCIETY will
create an original theatrical production for the New Years countdown featuring
aerial, circus, contortion, and dance, choreographed to a live band. After the
countdown, drop and toast, the soundtrack of the New Year will be composed by
Danish EDM superstar TRENTEMOLLER with an exclusive Dj set, his first in San
Francisco in years. Then comes beloved SoCal innovators THE GLITCH MOB, who
play an extended after-hours DJ set of their patented midtempo lunacy. The
stage will conclude with one of the rising stars of dance music, Los Angeles
midtempo hero PUMPKIN.

At Sea of Dreams, even the
smaller stages often pack the largest punch. Case in point is the return of the
OPULENT TEMPLE & OPEL EXPERIENCE, who present a unique audiovisual
installation. Italian tech house hero PLAZA DE FUNK headlines the room joined
by SunsetSF’s MOTION POTION and Opulent Temple residents SYD GRIS, DULCE VITA,
COSMIC SELECTOR, DEX STAKKER and BRIAN WILLIAMS.

The Mezzanine stage will be
engulfed in the sounds of the BASSCRAFT (VOID) SOUNDSYSYTEM where Sea of Dreams
welcomes back DIRTYBIRD RECORDS, RAINDANCE and DAX PRESENTS. In that state of
the art soundscape, DirtyBird’s CHRISTIAN MARTIN and WORTHY are joined by Raindance/Nexus beatsmiths MOZAIC,

When you call yourself “(anything) – FUNK” you had better be sure to come correct with your A-Game of deep fried, butter drenched, finger lickin badness. And thankfully, LA producer DAM FUNK has the sounds for that science. If Roger Troutman and Prince had a kid, he’d probably sound (and maybe look) like Dam Funk. The 80′s “boogie” or “bomb funk” sound has had few heroes in the past 20 years outside of admirable boutique dj parties (like SF’s amazing “Sweater Funk”). But this Steones Throw records supertrooper has almost single-handedly revived the sound and making the funk acceptable to (gulp) hipsters.But if you were worried that this party was all about boogie, fear not, because the whole show will be chocked full of other funk vibes including disco (Jeffrey Paradise), soul (the Motown on Mondays DJs), hip hop (Kevvy Kev), nostalgic updation (the Massive Selector dudes) and finally, the SF Funk Fest founding father Motion Potion who will do a set of updated Ghetto Funk. restaurants in Brooklyn and Miami and star on Bravo’s “Top Chef”. Her
constant exploration of cuisine that she dubs “Global Soul” and the
excitement she brings to everything she does has made her one of the
culinary world’s true crossover stars. This November, Chef Josie
returned to both Top Chef Season 10 and San Francisco to turn the
kitchen at THEE PARKSIDE (1600 17th street at Wisconsin) in Potrero Hill
into a popup hub for her Global Soul cuisine movement.

JOSIE ALSO LOVES THE FUNK. So SunsetSF will begin collaborating with
her on a weekly Sunday Brunch music affair entitled “BEATS FOR BRUNCH”.
From 11-3 every Sunday, SunsetSF’s choice Djs will spin the musical

You should, because Beats for Lunch, our monthly lunchtime dance-off returns with our biggest talent yet, Jon H of Fort Knox 5, playing an hourlong Funk-Fest centric set of his unique jams. Food trucks, funk, a kickass sound system (maybe the best in SF) and some of the best music anywhere.

ALL GOOD FUNK ALLIANCE & PLEASUREMAKER The city’s best weekly afrofunky getdown is back with SF Funk Fest, this time featuring an extended set by DC nufunk producers AGFA and rezzies Pleasuremaker. All Good Funk Alliance will play a unique set of future gogo distinctly different from their planned set at Mighty on Friday.
FRIDAY, 11.16 @ MIGHTY PEANUT BUTTER WOLF with FORT KNOX 5 ALL GOOD FUNK ALLIANCE + MOTION POTiON & the M.O.M. DJ’sThe annual SF Funk Fest “house party” is back in a big way. The event that has given you everybody from Z-trip to Q-Bert to Kraak & Smaak to Bambaataa is back with a 5-headed hydra of a lineup that will hit the funk from every angle. Stones Throw Records impresario Peanut Butter Wolf is one of the nation’s leading collectors of rare wax. His ability to assemble them into stirring audio-visual mosaics has been blowing minds for years. Fort Knox 5 and All Good Funk Alliance concentrate on the future of funk with some of the best midtempo breakbeat ever concocted. FK5 leans towards more eclectic funk/rock styles while All Good leans heavily on the DC GoGo they grew up on. The M.O.M. DJs are all about Motown and will host the backroom bringing that unique positive Motown Vibe. Motion Potion founded SFFunk and has played this party for eleven years. There are few DJs anywhere that can do funk sets like he does.
SATURDAY NOV. 17 @ the INDEPENDENT DIEGO’s UMBRELLA & VOKAB CO.Diego’s Umbrella is ON FIRE. The Bay Area famed purveyors of Gypsy Pirate Polka sound more like Muse than Tha Musement of late. Although the backdrop is still their unique blend of Balkans from Mexico, they are growing stronger, more confident, and shall we say, more electric of late. Diego’s of 2012 simply rocks twice as hard as Diego’s of 2011 and that’s saying something. They will be joined by none other than SoCal midtempo trip hop outfit Vokab Co. for a night at the Indy that should drop jaws when the bands drop drawers.

FRED WESLEY & THE NEW JB’s 11.3.12 at Mezzanine

Last Saturday was a night 6 years in the making. Since 2007, when SunsetSF helped to bring about the Godfather of Soul’s last SF appearance at “Festival of the Golden Gate” we have been hard at work trying to reunite the JB’s. Putting Fred Wesley, Clyde Stubblefield, Jabo Starks and Fred Thomas on the same stage took that long to accomplish, and that doesn’t even count the countless hours pursuing other living JB’s who, for whatever reason could not appear. But it takes only a few looks at photos like these to understand how it was all worth it. Many of the tracks the JB’s chose were obscurities, rarely performed by even these gentlemen. Tracks like “JB’s Monaurail”, “Same Beat”, “Damn Right I’m Somebody” and “Talkin Loud & Sayin’ Nothin” got royal treatment, as did Lyrics Born on a raucous appearance on the classic “Pass the Peas”. Many thanks to the JB’s and to all those who showed up Monday at Madrone to hear our JB’s tribute Dj sets.

Rebirth Brass Band is back at SF Funk Fest for their first time since 2004, when they rocked all afternoon long in the courtyard of the Art Institute. A lot has happened to these happy warriors since then. Several band members have passed, Katrina leveled their city, and even more unlikely, the Saints won a Super Bowl. But the Rebith Brass Band has seemed to not only roll with the punches, but grow with them, culminating in a 2011 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Album. Rebirth shows are always the best kind of party and these should be no different. Come early to catch the California Honeydrops on Friday, and the new Jazz Mafia project Subharmonic, playing Saturday.

legendary DJs, SPINNA & RICH MEDINA to Mighty as they play an entire
night focused on the music of JAMES BROWN and FELA ANIKULAPO KUTI.
Spinna and Medina have been two of the most prolific producers of
reconstructed dancefloor funk. Spinna alone has made huge strides in
gaining new recognition for soul artists through his seminal remix and
cover compillations of Stevie Wonder and the offshot “Wonderful”
parties. To have him and Rich Medina in SF playing both the Godfather
and Fela is a huge treat.

“The centerpiece concert of this year’s festival presents legendary arranger and trombone player Fred Wesley playing a rare show with the rhythms section that powered some of James Brown’s most lethal ’70s hits. An integral part of both Brown’s backing band the J.B.’s and Parliament-Funkadelic, Wesley served as musical director for both iconic groups in addition to leading the instrumental outfits on hit recordings in their own right as Fred Wesley and the J.B.’s and The Horny Horns (the P-Funk horn section spinoff that featured Wesley along with saxophonist Maceo Parker).
