After years touring regionally and internationally with Soulive, the China Band and the Trama Unit, Toussaint’s powerfully soulful voice can now be heard full-time with the dub/funk unit Buru Style.
“There’s no question that we saw a very grown up Toussaint last night,” said Boston blogger and Weekly Dig author Kip O’Neill recently, referring to the singer’s sharply focused intensity and finely crafted compositions. Of the Toussaint and Buru combination, the Boston Herald’s Chris Blagg wrote, “His versatile band jumps easily from dubbed-out reggae explorations to hopped-up funk and soul romps,” adding, “[but it’s] all anchored by Toussaint’s charismatic tenor. The Hartford Advocate’s Dan Barry decided to forgo all attempts at literary grandiosity and simply stated, “Toussaint Liberator & Buru Style's total nuclear funk eradicates the ego and leaves only an ass-shaking, joy-filled husk behind.”
And it’s all true. A Toussaint and Buru show starts and then doesn’t quit until you’re on the way home. Reggae, funk, soul; hard-grooving, dubingly meditative, gritty and slick: they’re all packed into the 18 or so tunes that fly from Toussaint and Buru’s bandstand every hour.
But there’s no need to take my word for it. Check out the group’s debut EP on Itunes, Emusic and elsewhere, and get ready for the first full-length album, due out late spring 2010. And, of course, come experience Toussaint Liberator and Buru Style live when they head to a city near you.
