NOT SOLD OUT - Tickets available at the door 9pm Week two of SF Funk celebrates the sights and sounds of one of the funk's birthplaces, New Orleans. On Friday, November 8 and Saturday, November 9, Grammy award winning REBIRTH BRASS BAND will play two huge nights at Mezzanine, joined by the CALIFORNIA HONEYDROPS on Friday and TBA on Saturday. Rebirth is a New Orleans institution and one of the great ambassadors of New Orleans funk, and brass band swing fore more than two decades. Rebirth's arrangements are tighter than the eye of a needle, and more fun than a barrel of monkeys. Their ability to use traditional brass band instrumentation as a vehicle for 'brasstardizations' of modern funk, r&b and hip hop has elevated them above their peers, genre and city into a class all by themselves. Rebirth has played for SunsetSF more than 50 times in the past 10 years and the last 25 shows have sold out in advance. We recommend you purchase early.

Rebirth Brass Band

Simply put, The Rebirth Brass Band is a New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the now infamous Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. Rebirth is committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands while at the same time incorporating modern music into their show. Their signature brand of heavy funk has not only won over several generations of music lovers, it has become the soundtrack to an entire city. In the wake of the sometimes-stringent competition amongst brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down.
Brass band music is joyful, heart-pumping and it was born and bred in soul-saturated New Orleans. Rebirth takes brassy funk to the city's streets and clubs, doing second-line parades just about every Sunday and rocking regular gigs at night. But Rebirths reach is far beyond sweet-home New Orleans. Founded by tuba man and bandleader Phillip Frazier in 1983, Rebirth has toured the United States, Europe, and Africa. Frazier has compared brass music to gospel music saying "It's very spiritual because the same feeling you get listening to gospel music, that feeling hits you with our band. It hits you in the heart, makes you want get up and shout".

The California Honeydrops

Digging deep into the roots of American music, The California Honeydrops embrace the traditions of Blues, Gospel, Second Line New Orleans Jazz, and early R&B with stellar performances of traditional material as well as their own innovative music. Formed in November 2007, The California Honeydrops first performed on the streets and in the subways stations in Oakland, California. Playfully crossing genres from Roots and Blues to R&B and soul, The California Honeydrops’ sound is tied together by soulful vocal harmonies, colorful shouts from brass and horns, and a funky, good-times New Orleans rhythm section. They quickly gained a reputation as the best party in the Bay Area.
"The California Honeydrops, from Oakland, are the most refreshing act to roll down the blues highway in some time. Few groups before them have melded so many strains of African American music into such a seamless whole." --livingblues.com
