THIS WEEK ON AMOEBA.COM
SunsetSF co-founder Robbie Kowal interviewed by BombHipHop’s Dave Paul
“How I Got Here”
“How I Got Here” with Robbie Kowal of SunsetSF – Part I in new Dave Paul Guest Amoeblogger Series
This is probably the most in-depth interview anyone at SunsetSF has ever given and gives a very honest, no-holds-barred look behind the scenes at being an independent promoter. If you ever wondered what the heck SunsetSF is, or why the heck there is a SunsetSFthis is a good read. Also a cautionary tale for anyone wanting to get into the BIZ-ness.

![]() Madness. It’s just madness what happens in a proper dubstep mosh. Like other intense seminal styles that came before it such as punk, northern soul, or metal, a dubstep dancefloor is sweaty, intense, and visceral. The music hits like heavy wet waves of seawater, pulsing, punishing, and heavy. In the US, much dubstep, glitch (the hip hop version) and grime, is played on laptops using mixing software like Ableton. But in London, in the East side grime scene where the movement started, a DJ’s skills on the decks, are as important as the music he plays. Like his frequent collaborator, Rusko, Caspa, had to overcome enormous odds to rise to the top of the dubstep scene. Simply put, young white kids have a hard time getting respect in the East London grime scene. That he has come so far so fast is testament not only to Caspa’s skills in the studio, but to his unarguable abilities on the decks, mixing live, with dubplates, records, cds, and serato. SANTI IS WARNING YOU! SEA of DREAMS is GOING TO SELL OUT![]() Over the past 11 years, hundreds of artists of all kinds has performed at Sea of Dreams, musicians, djs, dancers, aerialists, clowns, painters, visualists… people have hung from ceilings, jumped off trampolines, shot confetti cannons, dropped balloons, smashed grandfather clocks and generally contributed to making SOD the New Years Party that all other NYE events are measured by. But one thing has NEVER happened in 11 years of Sea of Dreams. SEA OF DREAMS HAS NEVER SOLD OUT BEFORE. And yet this year, the excitement and anticipation about this truly “once in a lifetime” lineup, seems to be pushing ticket sales faster and farther than ever see before. Whether it’s Beats Antique’s first SF show in a year, Amon Tobin bringing the summer’s most incredible tour, the presence of the ENTIRE Dirty Bird AND Mystic Beat Lounge crews… or the superdupersuperstar diva pictured above… people seem to be freaking out this year. As dozens of other west coast events have been announced, SOD sales have chugged along at a pace we’ve never seen before as if there is nothing that could compete with the extreme synergy of this lineup. All of the discount GA tickets are gone. The VIP discount tickets are almost gone. If things continue as they have been, and they are showing no signs of stopping… then SEA OF DREAMS WILL SELL OUT THIS YEAR FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER. We advise you to get you ticket now. ![]() The SF Funk Fest comes to an end this weekend with the SOS BAND at Yoshis. And while it’s hard to pinpoint one highlight of our first complete SFFF month-long run since 2008, there were many beautiful moments that stand out. Dam Funk wading through the crowd with his Keytar, the sweaty dancefloor at Kraak & Smaak, the incredible charisma of Morris Day & the Time, the wonderful scene for Romanowski at Motown on Mondays, and the sight of whole club still full and dancing (to FUNK no less dealt by SFFF founder MoPo) long after the Budos and Afrolicious left the stage last Saurday. It was a month of shows that we will not soon forget and we invite you to join us this weekend as we close it out proper with the legendary SOS Band. This intimate Yoshis presentation is sure to sell out in advance, so BUY TICKETS NOW. |

There’s few things more fun than a healthy dancefloor. But what added to the magic of EoTo’s 11.18 performance at Mezzanine, were the odds they defeated to pull it off. With a good deal of their complex electronics having crashed 3 songs into their set, EoTo fell back on their simple virtuosity and instrumental skill. That the lack of some of their “toys” was unnoticeable to anyone but them is a testament to just how good these guys are. They rocked the party with one hand literally tied behind their backs. Thanks to all who came. Check out these photos by Nina Noel
